IslamNews – Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and his Sudanese counterpart Mariam al-Sadiq al-Mahdi stressed on Tuesday that Ethiopia’s possible second phase filling of the Nile dam unilaterally would pose a direct threat to water security of Egypt and Sudan.

The remarks came during the two ministers meeting in Egypt’s capital Cairo, where the two diplomats tackled a number of issues of common interest, according to a joint press statement released after the meeting.

The two ministers highlighted the importance of reaching a binding legal agreement on filling and operating the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) that would achieve the interests of the three countries, preserve the water rights of Egypt and Sudan, and limit the damages of the project to the two downstream countries.

The ministers expressed concern about the stalled negotiations — stressing the importance of water security and preserving the water rights of all three countries as they called on Ethiopia to show goodwill.

The officials agreed on the formation of an international quartet negotiating mechanism — made of up the European Union, the United Nations, the United States and the African Union.

The AU is to function as the sponsor and as the organisation’s current Chair – the Democratic Republic of Congo, is to manage all negotiation activities.
